Colorado mountaineering legend Tom Hornbein, who left his name on Mount Everest, dies at 92

Colorado mountaineering legend Tom Hornbein, who left his name on Mount Everest, dies at 92 Tom Hornbein forever will be known for his bold first ascent of Mount Everest’s West Ridge as part of the first American expedition on the world’s tallest mountain in 1963, an audacious achievement which left his mark on the mountain forever. A section high on the route has been known ever since as the Hornbein Couloir.Hornbein, who died in Estes Park on Saturday at 92, earned his fame by what he and climbing partner Willi Unsoeld did on Everest 60 years ago this month, which included the first traverse across the mountain’s summit and an overnight bivouac while descending the Southeast Ridge at 28,000 feet. Yet he is being remembered by those in the mountaineering community for his humility as much as his epic Everest story.Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld dwarfed by Mount Everest’s enormous West Ridge in this 1963 photo. Rockies Mailbag: Does Colorado need to move on from Ryan McMahon?

Rockies Mailbag: Does Colorado need to move on from Ryan McMahon? Denver Post sports writer Patrick Saunders with the latest installment of his Rockies Mailbag.Pose a Rockies — or MLB — related question for the Rockies Mailbag. Is it time for the Ryan McMahon experiment to end? He has loads of potential (tons of power and a solid glove) but he’s never put everything together. At least not consistently. Is it time to see what we can get for him?— James H., Highlands RanchJames, I understand you’re criticism of McMahon. As I write this, the third baseman is hitting .203 with four homers and 14 RBIs. His 49 strikeouts are the fourth-most in the majors and his 35.8% strikeout rate is, by far, the highest of his career.I asked him about his slump a few days ago. He said he was angry at himself for missing pitches that he should be hitting. He’s trying to be patient at the plate, yet by doing that, he’s missing pitches early in the count that he might be driving. It’s a Catch-22 right now.A look inside the ...

From Colorado Mines walk-on to Broncos tryout, Josh Johnston’s football journey a true underdog story

From Colorado Mines walk-on to Broncos tryout, Josh Johnston’s football journey a true underdog story Give Josh Johnston an opportunity, and he will do whatever it takes to make the most of it.In 2017, Johnston arrived at the Colorado School of Mines as a freshman uncertain if he would even have a spot on the football team. But when a chance to walk on landed on his lap, Johnston burst through the door, needing only a week of fall camp to prove he could be a part of a wide receiver group that already had six players on some form of scholarship.Six years later, Johnston is in a similar situation. He has been invited to the Broncos rookie minicamp, where the stakes are higher and the odds heavily against him. But if he can catch the eye of the Broncos’ coaching staff as he did at Mines, the reward could be life-changing.“With all the opportunities I’ve seen (Johnston) get, he’s done something pretty cool with them,” Mines wide receivers coach Ryan Diedrick said. “Whatever the outcome, he’s definitely going to make some plays.”Johnston is glowi...

If Nuggets role players can assemble road performance as complete as Game 5, Suns will finally set in Phoenix

If Nuggets role players can assemble road performance as complete as Game 5, Suns will finally set in Phoenix Michael Malone doesn’t throw chairs during film sessions. He leaves it to his players to throw elbows at opposing team owners during games.“This is not 1980s Bob Knight Indiana, where it’s just like, I’m telling our players,” Malone slammed his fist on the table in front of him. “It’s interactive. It’s players taking ownership. ‘What do you see? What can we do better?'”In the film session after consecutive playoff losses in Phoenix, several of the Nuggets’ unheralded characters identified one thing they needed to do better — a spirit that reflected (in a more tangible, on-the-court sense) Nikola Jokic’s Game 4 skirmish in the stands.“Let’s be an irritant,” as Malone put it.More specifically: Make the Suns’ red-hot ball of fire work a little harder, and maybe the blaze would lower to room temperature. Devin Booker averaged 41.5 points on 79% shooting — 67% from beyond the arc &...

Kiszla: With twinkling eyes, Nuggets center Nikola Jokic burns hotter than the Suns

Published Fri, 22 Nov 2024 07:17:56 GMT

Kiszla: With twinkling eyes, Nuggets center Nikola Jokic burns hotter than the Suns The magic of Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is born from the twinkle in his eyes, which light up with delightfully childlike glee the instant before he shares the basketball or spreads joy for life. When this big Joker is twinkling, baby, he’s sees a game more beautiful than our fondest hoop dreams.  And he burns hotter than the Suns.“I think sometimes we take Nikola Jokic for granted,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said Tuesday. “What he is doing is just incredible every single night.”In a crucial NBA playoff game, Jokic killed Suns owner Mat Ishbia with kindness, then buried Phoenix with a triple-double in a 118-102 victory that put Denver one win away from advancing to the Western Conference finals. We could talk about the 29 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists Jokic dropped on the Suns to set the record for most postseason triple-doubles by any center in the history of this league with 10. But grumpy old Kendrick Perkins doesn’t want to hear that noise.“Must be stat-padding,” Mal...

Letters: Cruel joke? Boebert would make AR-15 the “national gun.”

Published Fri, 22 Nov 2024 07:17:56 GMT

Letters: Cruel joke? Boebert would make AR-15 the “national gun.” A critical look at Boebert’s “National Gun”“An AR–15 style rifle chambered in a .223 Remington round or a 5.56x45mm NATO round is hereby declared to be the National Gun of the United States.”The bolded quote above is the entire text of H.R. 1095, a bill introduced in Congress on Feb. 17 and cosponsored by our congresswoman, Lauren Boebert. One of her co-sponsors on the bill is none other than George Santos, the congressman who faked virtually every aspect of his life. Is this a cruel joke? The AR-15 assault rifle Boebert wants to make our “National Gun” is a weapon of war. Its bullets are designed to tear human flesh to pieces by “yawing”, tumbling or fragmenting in the body, thereby causing maximum internal bleeding and tissue damage. I am a Vietnam War vet, and the M-16s we carried there were an offshoot of the AR-15. The Army always told us it was the best rifle in the world because of how efficiently it killed “the enemy”.Recently, the AR-15 has been used in mas...
