PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A tissue sample from the brain of a gunman who killed 18 people and injured 13 others in Maine has been sent to a lab in Massachusetts to be examined for signs of injury or trauma related to his service in the Army Reserves, officials said Monday. The state’s chief medical examiner wants to know if a brain injury stemming from 40-year-old Robert Card’s military service could have contributed to unusual behavior he exhibited leading up to the Oct. 25 shootings at a bowling alley and at a bar in Lewiston .A spokesperson for the medical examiner’s office characterized the extra step as a matter of thoroughness “due to the combined history of military experience and actions.”“In an event such as this, people are left with more questions than answers. It is our belief that if we can conduct testing (in-house or outsourced) that may shed light on some of those answers, we have a responsibility to do that,” Lindsey Chasteen, offic...Members of Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association replace 9-year-old boy’s stolen bike

Christmas came early this year for one nine-year-old boy in Boston when members of the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association delivered a new bike. John Lydon, who lives with autism, loves riding his bike. Recently, though, a man was caught on camera going into Lydon’s family’s backyard and taking the boy’s bike. Just in time for the holidays, Lydon was putting his helmet back on and riding in style on Monday as police officers replaced the stolen bike. An unexpected gift for Lydon, the sight of her son smiling as an even greater gift for Lydon’s mother, Meaghan, who is also a nurse at Mass General.“For the community to come together and the policemen, the Boston police, everybody, it’s just so amazingly thoughtful,” Meaghan said. The patrolman’s association said it was a no-brainer to replace Lydon’s bike.Lame duck Boston city councilor skips work in support of Palestinian-led ‘global strike’

Taking the podium at an event in Boston last Tuesday, Joe Biden wasted no time taking aim at a leading progressive’s hemming and hawing when asked to condemn Hamas’ mass rape of Israeli women on Oct. 7. Two days earlier, Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal had tried to duck journalist Dana Bash’s questioning about Hamas’ atrocities, which included rapes so violent that they broke women’s pelvic bones before Hamas gunmen shot their victims in the genitals and the head.Biden summoned reporters into the closed session precisely in order to broadcast his repudiation of Jayapal to the world. “Over the past weeks,” he began, “survivors and witnesses of the attacks have shared the horrific accounts of unimaginable cruelty. Reports of women raped – repeatedly raped – and their bodies mutilated while still alive, of women’s corpses being desecrated, Hamas’ terrorists inflicting as much pain and suffering on women and girls as possible and then murdering them. It’s appalling.”Calling out...15 airmen disciplined after Jack Teixeira investigation at Massachusetts Air National Guard base

When news of Shohei Ohtani’s historic 10-year, $700 million deal broke, reports suggested a significant amount of the money would be deferred to help reduce the Dodgers’ luxury tax burden. They weren’t kidding.According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, $680 million of Ohtani’s $700 million will be deferred to the end of the contract. Ohtani will be paid $2 million annually over the life of the deal, and the remaining money will be paid without interest from 2034 to 2043.Ohtani reportedly proposed the idea himself, and by deferring such a large portion of his salary, Ohtani will substantially reduce his contract’s luxury tax burden on the Dodgers, allowing the club to continue spending and add even more talent to their roster. According to Ardaya, Ohtani’s deal is expected to carry an average annually luxury tax hit of about $46 million.Deferred money in MLB deals is nothing new.
